No visit to the North East of England would be complete without a visit to Durham Cathedral. Construction started on this great cathedral in 1093. It rises dramatically above the riverbanks and woodlands of the surrounding countryside. This is a Norman cathedral build in the Romanesque style. The eastern end holds the Chapel of the Nine Alters which is in the Gothic style. The Undercroft features a stunning medieval vaulted ceiling. The cathedral houses the shrine of St Cuthbert.
